M8, ASOS, PLTV... some names you need to know.
Taking the high road
ProLogis is developing more than 1 million sq ft of prime industrial and distribution space in its first venture north of the border. ProLogis M8 is named after the motorway which straddles the Central Belt between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The M8 corridor is ideally placed to take advantage of transport links that will make central Scotland a new hotspot for distribution warehouse development.
“Planning permission has been received and we’re talking to various pre-lets at the moment,” said Neil Dickinson, Vice President Development. “This part of Scotland is an area that is under-supplied with quality distribution centres and it made sense to move in there.
“The site was formerly used for coal mining, so we have had to secure a number of mine shafts to make it safe for development. That involved shifting in 35,000 tonnes of PFA ash and concrete over a period of three months.”
ProLogis M8 is within 30 minutes of Glasgow and Edinburgh International airports and an hour’s drive from Prestwick’s air freight terminal. Scotland’s first Eurofreight terminal is just two miles distant and provides links direct to the rest of the UK and Europe. If that was not enough, Scotland’s largest cargo port is just 30 minutes’ drive away.
etail therapy
ProLogis has announced a lease of 158,000 sq ft to As Seen On Screen (ASOS), the online fashion store.
The clothes “etailer” will occupy a recently-completed distribution centre at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, on the M1 motorway.
ASOS.com is consolidating its logistics operations into the new ProLogis facility and will use the space as the nationwide distribution centre for its extensive range of men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and beauty brands, serving customers throughout the country.
“We're very pleased to announce this new agreement with ASOS.com, one of the fastest growing online retailers in the United Kingdom,” said Alan Curtis, Managing Director of ProLogis UK.
“Online retail is one of the fastest growing industry sectors in the United Kingdom, with Internet-based sales growth exceeding 370% over the past four years. This market segment presents substantial opportunities for industrial developers with high-quality facilities in the right locations.”
What’s on the box?
Another exciting development this year has been the launch of ProLogis TV, the online ProLogis news and events channel.
The service can be accessed at www.prologis.tv and is packed with interesting features, including lively reports of the European Property Awards in Munich and the IAS Property Awards in London. There are warehouse launches and lunches, the full story of the Captain Perrin Memorial and – for those with a short attention span – a fast-motion 140-second guide to MIPIM 2007.
ProLogis TV is the brainchild of UK Communications Manager Nick Brown. “I saw the potential for offering general industry news and thought it would be an excellent way to give us a complementary string to our bow. ProLogis TV supplements our other web content with specific ProLogis material.
“When we started with the Shed Show in February, nobody else was broadcasting that footage to the marketplace. Now even the organisers have used it. It’s been a great success and we have 2,000 names on an e-mail list to alert people to the new content.
With the increase in broadband take-up and technological advances, the service looks set to grow and grow.
