The Bigger Picture
The largest speculative building undertaken to date by ProLogis UK – and one of the largest sheds in Europe – is the Wincanton Multi-User Warehouse at Kettering.
Its 700,000 square feet are equivalent to eight Wembley Stadium football pitches and here you can see the extent of the racking, with capacity for 110,000 pallets. Wincanton operates the building as a Direct Import Centre for the High Street chain Argos.
Up to 450 containers a week arrive from the East Coast ports of Felixstowe, Immingham and Southampton. These are full of loose product which is rationalised into pallets (23,000 pallets a week during the October to December peak), before being sent on to Argos’ nine Regional Distribution Centres and two National Distribution Centres. They eventually reach 760 Argos stores nationwide.
Direct Import Centres are expected to become the preferred method of distributing goods from the Far East. The location of ProLogis Park Kettering on the A14 is ideal for this massive interception hub.
